Wings of Grey Silence

Wings of Grey Silence opens onto near total black, and the elephant's head gathers itself out of that dark the way a thought gathers before it is spoken. The ears spread wide to both edges of the surface, caught mid unfurling like great wings, each one built from a field of individual marks that thickens toward the crown and thins toward the outer edge.

At the centre, the forehead holds the densest passage in the piece, a plane so full it reads almost as solid grey. From there the form narrows into the trunk, which survives as little more than a fine, curling trace of light, and into tusks that appear only faintly, offered to the eye rather than insisted upon.

The elephant has always carried a certain symbolism, memory, patience, a quiet and enormous knowing. Here that symbolism sits in the composition itself. What the field of depth holds most fully is the brow, the eyes, the wide listening ears, the parts we associate with holding and remembering. What fades first is the trunk, the tusks, the parts that reach outward into the world.

No paint was used to build this image, no print, no ink. It exists through depth and controlled absence within the surface itself. From across a room it reads as a single grey presence, calm and monumental against the black. Come closer, and that calm resolves into a field of individual marks, each one small and exact.

Light decides how much of the elephant you are given. Under a low, angled light the ears seem to lift and the trunk grows clear, under flatter light whole passages sink back into the dark they came from. The work is never quite finished, because it keeps changing with the hour, the room, and where the viewer chooses to stand.
