Whispers Beneath the Skin

Whispers Beneath the Skin begins with silence. No color, no pigment, only the surface of acrylic glass and the marks left within it.

The image does not sit on top of the material. It lives inside it, called forward through controlled scratches that catch the light and let it go again. What appears is not painted, but uncovered, as though something had always been waiting beneath the surface, needing only the right angle to be seen.

From a distance, the work reads as one quiet presence, a face, a body, a memory held together by tension and restraint. Step closer and that presence dissolves into a field of countless controlled scratches, each one small, each one necessary, none of them alone able to hold the whole.

There is something intimate in this. Skin has always carried what words cannot, the flush of feeling, the memory of touch, the quiet evidence of a life lived. Here, that idea is taken literally. The image itself becomes a kind of skin, thin, sensitive, marked, and what moves beneath it only becomes visible when light is allowed to travel across it.

As the viewer shifts position, the figure moves between clarity and absence, present one moment, dissolved into pure texture the next. That instability is not a flaw in the piece. It is the piece. Meaning here is not fixed, it has to be found, again and again, the way a whisper must be listened for rather than simply heard.

This work continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
