Where You Were

The image is a crowd. Bodies pressed close together against absolute black, a gathering so dense the figures almost merge into a single silhouette. No faces. No features. Only the faint outlines that light finds in the surface, revealing shoulders, hands, and the suggestion of profiles that never quite complete themselves.

In the center of that crowd, there is a space shaped like a person. Not emptiness by accident. A form, clearly defined, slightly brighter than the bodies surrounding it. The negative space holds more weight than anything around it. Something was here. Someone was here. The crowd still carries the outline of that presence.

Where You Were is a work about absence and community. About the way a group of people can hold the shape of someone who is no longer among them. About the particular kind of silence that settles in a space that used to be filled.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image does not appear through addition. It emerges through removal, through controlled scratches in acrylic glass that each catch the light differently as the viewer moves. From a distance, the scene is monumental, a crowd gathered in the dark. Up close, the surface reveals itself as a field of marks, each one precise, each one part of a larger construction. The work shifts between presence and stillness the same way the subject does.

The surrounding figures never become faces. That is intentional. They are everyone. They are no one. The empty space among them is the most recognizable thing in the image.

This work continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
