Where Skin Forgets

Where Skin Forgets is a contemporary artwork about intimacy, surrender and the moment two bodies become a single form.

Two figures hold each other so closely that the boundary between them disappears. Their shapes flow together into one sculptural silhouette, surrounded by deep shadow, shaped by a single soft source of light. The composition does not show two people side by side. It shows the space they create together.

The title names what happens in genuine closeness. The skin forgets where it ends. The self becomes uncertain. That softening of boundaries is not fragile here. It is the image of connection at its most complete.

No paint. No ink. No print. The image appears through controlled surface damage on acrylic glass. Each scratch catches the light differently depending on the angle of view, slowly bringing the two figures into focus, or letting them dissolve back into the dark. The image lives in that movement.

Shift your position, and the embrace becomes something else. The figures clarify, then fade. They are always there, and never fully fixed. The light decides how much you are allowed to see.

From a distance, the work reads as a single monumental form. A silhouette rising from shadow. Move closer, and the surface opens into a field of controlled scratches, each one a quiet act of removal. The image was never added. It was uncovered.

Where Skin Forgets continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
