Weight of Her Arms returns to one of the oldest images in art history, a mother holding the body of her son, and brings it into the present. The Pietà emerges here not from marble but from complete darkness, a strong Italian mother cradling the exhausted body of a grown man across her lap. There are no wounds to explain the grief. There is only the weight of him, and the tenderness with which she carries it.

The image does not appear through paint or print. It exists because the surface has been altered, controlled scratches cut into acrylic glass, each one catching light differently as the viewer moves. No paint. No print. No ink. Only removal, and what removal reveals.

As the light shifts, the two figures drift between clarity and absence. At moments the embrace feels almost lit from within, at others it dissolves back into the black it was pulled from, as if grief itself will not hold still long enough to be looked at directly.

From across the room the piece reads as monumental, a single held breath in deep black. Move closer and that same breath breaks apart into a field of scratches, thousands of small decisions that, together, become a body being held.

Beneath the classical composition sits a quieter truth. This is not only a mother and a son. It is every arm that has ever borne another person's exhaustion, every strength that shows itself not through force but through stillness and endurance.

Weight of Her Arms continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

"Some weights are only ever carried by love."
