Two Shadows in One Doorway holds a single instant: two bodies meeting in a kiss, framed by a doorway that glows while the room around it stays in absolute black. Nothing outside that frame exists. The darkness is not empty, it is where the eye rests before it returns to the light.

The field of fine scratches gathers inside the doorway like a held breath, catching every line of the two figures until they read as one shape, two shadows fused into a single silhouette. Outside that rectangle of light, the acrylic glass stays untouched, pure black, a void that makes the embrace feel like the only thing left in the world.

Clothes left on the floor, bare feet, the quiet after undressing: this is not a staged pose but a moment caught mid breath. The image is formed entirely through controlled surface damage on acrylic glass, a field of individual marks that becomes skin, light and longing without a trace of paint or print.

The image is always present, in daylight or in near darkness. Light does not create it, it sharpens it. Under direct light the scratches catch and hold the glow of that doorway, the contrast deepens, and the two figures seem to lean further into each other. From another angle the same embrace settles into quiet, still legible, simply calmer.

Seen from across a room the work reads as pure architecture: a bright rectangle cut into black, two shapes merging at its center. Up close that rectangle dissolves into a field of individual marks, each one holding a sliver of the light that makes the kiss visible at all.

Two Shadows in One Doorway continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. Here that same damage becomes intimacy itself: a threshold between the dark we came from and the light we walk toward, together.

"Love, caught at the exact edge between darkness and light."
