Two Made Whole

Two Made Whole shows a pair of lovers folded into one another, their heads wrapped in luminous white fabric, suspended in a field of total blackness. No faces, only the outline of a jaw, the curve of a hand, the soft geometry of cloth catching light. What remains is intimacy stripped of identity, a closeness so complete that individual features no longer matter.

The image does not appear through paint or print. It emerges through controlled scratches cut into acrylic glass, a surface disturbed rather than decorated. Where the fabric folds, the scratches gather and lift into brightness. Where the darkness holds, the surface stays untouched, almost silent. The picture exists because something was taken away, not added.

Seen from across a room, the two figures read as a single monumental form, a quiet sculpture of togetherness. Move closer and that form dissolves into a dense field of marks, each one catching the light differently as you shift position. The lovers sharpen and soften depending on where you stand, as if intimacy itself refuses to hold still.

The wrapped heads suggest surrender, trust, even a kind of blindness that lovers accept when they let someone else become their whole field of vision. Two Made Whole speaks to that surrender, to the idea that being truly close to another person means losing a little of yourself in the process, and becoming legible only through them.

This work continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
