Two heads lean into one another until the space between them all but disappears, and what remains is not two silhouettes but a single form. The work holds that instant of closeness, the moment before an embrace settles, when faces are near enough to share breath and the world outside has gone quiet.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, built as a field of individual marks that gathers into skulls, shoulders and the soft weight of arms wrapped low around each other. Where the marks thicken, the figures come into presence. Where they thin, the bodies dissolve back into the dark, so the embrace itself seems to be forming and settling at once.

The image is always present, held in the surface rather than sitting on top of it. Light does not create the image, it sharpens it. Under direct light the scratches catch and reflect, the contrast deepens, and the closeness between the two heads reads with more weight. From a distance the piece settles into a single quiet shape, almost a heart, almost a held breath. Up close it opens into the field of fine scratches that built it.

The subject is one of the oldest in art, two people folded into each other, yet the method keeps it from ever feeling sentimental. Intimacy here is structural. It is carried by where the light is allowed to land and where it is withheld, so tenderness becomes something you can almost touch in the surface itself.

Two Heads Become One Light continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. This work is unique.

"Closeness, held in light and its absence."
