Turned From the Light shows what remains when the face is withheld. The back of a shaved head, the curve of a neck, one ear, the line of a shoulder, nothing more is offered, and nothing more is needed.
The image is built from depth and absence, not from addition. No paint, no print, no ink, only a field of individual marks set into the surface, each one a small withdrawal of material that lets light decide what becomes visible.
From across a room the work is monumental and silent, a pale shape resting in black. Step closer and that shape resolves into a field of depth, point by point, the skull's curve and the fine ridge of the ear emerging only where light is allowed to fall.
To turn from the light is to be seen without being known. The sitter keeps their face, their history, their name, and offers only the quiet architecture of the body instead, a gesture of privacy that feels closer to trust than to refusal.
The work changes with the room it hangs in. Morning light draws the shoulder forward, evening light lets the head dissolve back toward the dark, so the piece is never quite finished, only ever caught in a particular moment of being seen.
This piece continues the Art with Void series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through depth and absence rather than paint or print. This work is unique.
A visual language where absence is not emptiness, but presence.
"What is turned away still holds its shape in the dark."
