Time Wears a Face

Time Wears a Face brings forward a countenance that seems older than memory itself, a face without age, without name, gathered out of absolute black. It does not appear through paint or print. It emerges the way a face emerges from the dark when your eyes finally adjust, through removal, through controlled scratches drawn into acrylic glass until light has something to catch and hold.

The hair does not simply frame the face. It dissolves outward into roots, into wind, into bare branches, as if this figure were never fully separate from the earth it stands upon. The skin is carved rather than smooth, marked the way seasons mark stone, holding memory and silence in every line the light discovers.

Near the lower edge, almost lost in the darkness, a small ruined temple stands, and before it, smaller still, a single human figure. Against the scale of that vast, ageless face, the temple and the figure are reminders of how briefly we build, how briefly we stand, while something older watches on.

As the light shifts across the surface, the face moves between clarity and calm. From a distance it reads as monumental, a single unbroken presence looking back at you. Step closer and that presence dissolves into a field of scratches, countless small deliberate marks that only resolve into a face again once you step back and let the light do its work.

This piece continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
