Thunder Made Tender

Thunder Made Tender is a contemporary artwork about performance, presence and the silence that surrounds both.

Freddie Mercury was thunder. He commanded stages with one arm raised, a voice that filled every corner, and a presence that left no distance between himself and the people watching. And yet behind the spectacle there was something softer. Something that reached across a packed arena and made it feel entirely personal. That duality lives in the title. And it lives in the material.

The figure emerges from deep shadow. One arm extended upward. A microphone stand silhouette at his side. Soft light falls from above, tracing the outline of a man who understood that a stage was not just a platform but a place of transformation. The composition breathes. What surrounds him is not emptiness. It is weight.

The image does not appear through paint or ink. It emerges through controlled surface damage on acrylic glass. As the viewer moves, the light shifts. The figure arrives and retreats. One moment clear and present, the next dissolving back into the surface. In this medium, an image never fully settles. It remains in motion, the way memory always does.

From a distance, the work reads as a monument. Up close, it becomes something else entirely: a field of controlled scratches, each one catching light at its own angle, together constructing a presence out of disruption. No pigment. No print. No addition. Only the surface, altered.

Thunder Made Tender continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
