Thunder at Rest is a monumental contemporary artwork about power, stillness and the silence before a storm.

Zeus does not strike. He waits. Seated on a throne that rises from absolute darkness, one hand resting, the other cradling a lightning bolt that has not yet left his grip. This is not a god at war. This is a god in command of himself. The thunder is real, but it is held. The power is undeniable, but the choice is restraint.

The image appears on acrylic glass through controlled surface damage. No paint. No print. No ink. Where the surface has been altered, light catches and reveals. Where it remains untouched, the darkness holds its ground. Zeus emerges from that exchange, never fully surrendered to either.

The work moves as you move. The throne materializes and dissolves. The lightning bolt catches the light for a moment, then retreats back into shadow. The image lives between presence and absence, between clarity and disappearance. That instability is not a flaw. It is the tension the work is built on.

From a distance, the composition carries the grandeur of ancient Greek sculpture. Massive. Still. Inevitable. Step closer and the god dissolves into a field of controlled scratches. The monument becomes a surface. The myth becomes a material mark.

Thunder at Rest continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

"The most powerful force in the room is the one that does not need to prove it."
