There is a moment, just before a wave gives everything it has, when it seems to hold its breath. The Sea Exhales holds that instant still, the curl already breaking, spray hanging in the air like smoke, and around it all a deep, pure black closes in.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, built through controlled surface damage rather than anything applied onto it. Every mark was placed with intent, so that light would fall across the wave the way it falls across real water, unevenly, urgently.

The image is always there, visible with or without a light aimed at it. Light does not create this piece. It sharpens it. Under direct light the scratches catch and reflect, the spray seems to lift further off the black and the contrast deepens. From another angle, the wave settles into something quieter, more contemplative, but it never leaves. It simply reads differently.

From across a room, the wave is monumental, a single dark gesture suspended in black. Up close, it dissolves into a field of scratches, proof that something this vast is made from something this small, repeated with patience. The sea exhales, and the surface answers in the same language, through release, not addition.

The Sea Exhales continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print.

"The wave holds nothing back. Neither does the surface it is scratched into."
