A lone figure stands with his back to us, robed and still, facing a moon that no longer holds its shape. The circle behind him has come undone into thin horizontal lines, each one shifted just slightly from the last, as if the sky itself has slipped out of alignment.

He could be a ronin, a wanderer without a master, watching the one fixed point in his world begin to fracture. There is no violence in the breaking, only a quiet drift, as though the moon is dissolving the way memory does, line by line, until only an impression remains.

The image is built from depth and absence, not from addition. No paint, no print, no ink lies on the surface. What you see is a field of carved distance, a controlled absence that gathers and releases light.

Seen from across a room, the work is monumental and silent, a single dark figure before a pale, broken sphere. Move closer and the moon opens into a field of depth, thin voids catching the light at their own angle, shifting as you shift.

The samurai's stillness becomes the counterpoint to the moon's unraveling, the human figure the last steady line in a world coming apart around him. It is a quiet study of composure held in the face of dissolution.

This piece continues the Art with Void series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through depth and absence rather than paint or print. A visual language where absence is not emptiness, but presence.

"Even the moon can break, and still we stand and watch."
