The Keyhole Behind the Eye

A face all but disappears into the dark. What remains is not a likeness but an opening, a keyhole cut through where a cheek and a brow should be, as if the sitter has become the frame for something seen through them rather than in them.

Inside that opening, an eye watches, wide and steady, holding the only true light in the piece. Below it hangs a single small moon, and below that a staircase falls away into the dark, step after step, leading somewhere the face itself cannot follow.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is built through controlled surface damage worked into the acrylic glass, until a field of fine marks gathers into the curve of a cheek, the round of an eye, the rise of a stair. The picture exists because material was taken away, not added.

The image is always present, visible without any need for a spotlight. Light does not create the image. It sharpens it. Under direct light the scratches catch and hold the glow, the contrast deepens, and the staircase seems to fall further into the distance. It reads differently from every angle, without ever losing the image.

Seen from across a room, the work reads as one monumental gesture, a dark face broken open by a shape of light. Close up, it dissolves into a field of individual marks, patient and exact, the kind of surface that rewards a longer look. Between those two distances sits the real subject, the eye that watches against the self that hides, the part of a person that opens the door and the part that stays behind it.
