The Descent of Christ

The body arrives first as weight. A torso turns from the cross, one arm still bound to the beam, the head bowed low as though the moment of release has only just begun. Nothing in this image is soft. Every line of muscle and every fold of the loincloth is held by the same discipline that carries the whole composition, a body caught between suffering and surrender.

There is no paint here, and no print. The figure is not applied onto the surface of the acrylic glass, it is taken from it, formed by a field of individual marks that remove rather than add. Where the body catches light, controlled surface damage becomes skin, sinew and the taut line of an arm. Where the story recedes, the glass returns to pure, untouched black.

The image is always present, seen in full even in a quiet room. Light does not create it, it sharpens what is already there. Under a direct source, the scratches catch and hold that light, the contrast deepens, and the figure gains weight. Move around it and the descent reads differently from every angle, without ever losing its form.

From a distance the work reads as a single monumental gesture, a body lowered in an instant of stillness before the fall completes. Close up, that same body dissolves into a field of fine scratches, each one part of a larger structure rather than a picture drawn on top of it.

A descent is never only physical. It is the moment strength gives way to gravity, when the sacred is finally allowed to be simply human again, held rather than raised.
