Nikola Tesla holds a white pigeon on his raised hand, and for a moment the great inventor of unseen currents is utterly still. He looks at the bird the way he rarely let the world see him look at anything, with tenderness, with attention, with nothing between them.

This likeness is not painted or printed. It is formed through controlled scratches worked directly into the surface of acrylic glass, a field of fine scratches that gathers itself into a face, a collar, a wing. The image comes from removal, not addition, so what you see is closer to excavation than illustration.

Light does not create this image. It sharpens it. The portrait is present at every hour, in low light and in bright, but as the angle shifts the marks catch and the contrast deepens, so the work reads differently depending on where you stand and how the room is lit.

From across the room the piece holds together as one monumental image, Tesla's face and hand emerging from the dark with the bird settled against his cheek. Move closer and that same face opens into a field of individual marks, each one placed with intent, none of them legible alone.

The pairing carries its own quiet history. In his later years, increasingly solitary in a city that no longer quite knew what to make of him, Tesla found steady companionship in the pigeons he fed and cared for, one white bird above all the rest. A man whose name is tied to lightning and to forces too fast to see chose, for his great tenderness, a creature made entirely of softness and flight. This work holds both truths in the same surface, the public genius and the private devotion.

Tesla and the White Silence continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure. This work is unique.

"Even a mind built for lightning needed something gentle to hold."
