Sworn to the Night is a contemporary artwork about brotherhood, discipline and the gravity of approaching war.
The first warrior stands at the edge of the light. His helmet, his shield, his spear, all rendered with quiet certainty against a deep, consuming black. Behind him, the line of soldiers stretches back into darkness, each figure present but unresolved, their forms dissolving before they fully arrive. A brotherhood bound by oath and silence, moving toward something none of them have spoken aloud.
No paint. No print. No ink. The image emerges from controlled surface damage on acrylic glass. Every mark catches the light differently, and as the viewer shifts, the figures shift with them. The first man clarifies, then recedes. The line behind him surfaces, then disappears. The darkness is not static. It moves.
From a distance the work reads as a single, timeless confrontation with the night. Closer, it becomes something else entirely: a field of controlled scratches, each one part of a whole, holding nothing but light and the memory of its removal.
In ancient Greece, the phalanx was not a collection of men. It was one body, one breath, one commitment made visible in formation. This work lives in the moment before that commitment is sealed, the last instant in which each man is still himself, before he becomes part of something larger and irreversible.
Sworn to the Night continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
"Brotherhood is not chosen in the light. It is sworn to in the dark."
