Sworn to the Mist

Sworn to the Mist is a contemporary artwork about sacrifice, resistance and silence.

The figure stands alone. The sword is lowered. The shoulders carry something the landscape refuses to hold. A Highland silhouette caught in the moment between decision and surrender, between clarity and shadow. The mist does not threaten. It waits.

The image does not arrive through paint or print. It emerges through controlled surface damage on acrylic glass, a process of removal, not addition. Where the surface has been altered, light catches and holds. Where it has not, the material stays quiet. The figure exists because something has been taken away.

From a distance, the work reads as a monumental scene. The silhouette is complete, contained, still. Move closer and the image dissolves into a field of controlled scratches. The presence you sensed from across the room becomes texture, structure, decision.

Side lighting shifts the image as the viewer moves. In one position the figure appears fully. In another, it recedes into the acrylic glass, nearly absent. That movement belongs to the work. Sworn to the Mist does not resolve itself. It holds its ground, then retreats, just as the figure does.

There is something in this image about what it means to remain. To stand in a place no longer yours, in silence, without flourish. The sword is not raised. The weight is not hidden. This is not glory. This is the moment after glory, when the mist is the only witness.

Sworn to the Mist continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
