A tiger turns into three-quarter view, and light falls across only part of its face. The near side catches the glow fully, ear, brow, the first run of stripes down the cheek, while the far side begins its retreat into shadow before the turn is even complete.

Nothing here was added. The stripes, the fur, the quiet weight of the animal's stare are built from depth, a field of individual marks set into the surface itself, each one a small withdrawal rather than a stroke of color. No paint. No print. No ink.

Up close the structure is plain, a dense gathering of points along the lit cheek, thinning as the head turns, scattering further toward the ear and the crown until the marks give out entirely and the surface returns to black. From a distance those same points resolve into stripe and shadow, muscle and stillness, a tiger holding its gaze.

Tigers carry their own symbolism of solitude and quiet authority, an animal that is rarely approached and never quite fully seen, even when it is looking straight at you. Here that nature is doubled by the method itself. Half the face commits to presence, the other half withdraws, and the viewer is left to complete the animal in their own mind.

Seen across a room the work is monumental and still, a single head caught mid turn. Move closer and it becomes something else, a surface built entirely of depth, shifting with the light and the angle from which it is met.

This piece continues the Art with Void series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through depth and absence rather than paint or print.

A visual language where absence is not emptiness, but presence.

"Even in half light, a tiger does not need to be fully seen to be felt."
