Strength Without a Face begins with a body, not a portrait. The shoulders, the collarbones, the chest are traced in thin lines of white light against a field of absolute black, and where a face should be, there is only a perfect dark circle, rimmed in brightness, holding nothing.
This is strength stripped of identity. No expression to read, no gaze to meet, only the architecture of a body that could belong to anyone, and therefore to no one in particular. Power, here, is not a person. It is a shape the light agrees to reveal.
The image exists because the surface has been taken away, not built up. Every line of light is a place where the acrylic glass has been opened through controlled scratches, and it is that absence, not any applied mark, that lets the figure step forward out of the dark.
Move past the piece and it changes. From a distance the torso reads as a single monumental form, calm and complete. Up close, that same form dissolves into a quiet field of controlled surface damage, catching and losing the light with every shift of your position, so the body keeps moving between clarity and absence.
Without a face, the work becomes a mirror instead of a portrait. It asks what strength looks like when it has nothing left to prove and no one left to convince, only the fact of standing there, upright, in the dark.
This piece continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
"A body of light, and a silence where the face should be."
