Still Enough to Vanish

Still Enough to Vanish is a contemporary artwork about presence, dissolution, and the psychology of near-absence.

A young woman looks out from the surface. Her expression is calm, but it gives nothing away. At the edges of her face, the image begins to dissolve into soft darkness, as if she is choosing to recede rather than be fully seen. She is there, and she is leaving.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image emerges through controlled surface damage on acrylic glass. As the light shifts, so does she. From one angle, her features hold. From another, she softens into the surface, caught between clarity and quiet. The work does not stay still. Neither does she.

From a distance, the piece carries a monumental quiet, a portrait that commands attention without asking for it. Step closer, and it becomes a field of controlled scratches, each one a small act of removal that together construct a face, a feeling, a figure on the verge of vanishing.

There is something deeply psychological about a face that reveals nothing, that exists at the boundary of being known and being lost. The image lives in that boundary. So does she.

Still Enough to Vanish continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
