Steam Before Arrival

Two cups sit steaming on a small table. The chairs are angled toward each other, already in conversation, though no one has arrived to fill them. Steam Before Arrival holds that suspended minute, the one just before a door opens and two lives lean into the same warmth.

It is a picture of expectation rather than event. The table is set for a closeness that has not yet happened, and in that gap the work finds its quiet tension: presence promised, absence still felt, a room arranged for a meeting the viewer is invited to imagine into being.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, built through controlled scratches rather than added with pigment. What reads as steam rising from porcelain, as chairs catching a single hard light from above, is the result of removal, not addition, a picture carved out of what has been taken away.

The image is always present. Light gives it depth: under direct light the scratches catch and reflect, and the contrast deepens, the steam seems to lift a little higher, the black around the cups grows more absolute. Light does not create the image. It sharpens it. It reads differently from different angles, without ever losing the image.

From across the room the scene reads as a single monumental gesture in black and white, theatrical and still. Close up, it dissolves into a field of fine, controlled surface damage, grain and dust suspended in deep black, proof that intimacy, like this image, is made of many small marks working together.

Steam Before Arrival continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
