Spoken Before Words

Hands were always the first language. Before words took shape, before meaning found form, gesture existed. A reach. A pause. A held breath made visible through the body.

Spoken Before Words is a contemporary artwork about gesture, silence and the intimacy of the human form in stillness. The image does not appear through paint, ink or print. It emerges through controlled surface damage on acrylic glass, each scratch catching the light at a different angle, together forming something that feels suspended in time.

Against deep black negative space, the hands float. From a distance, the composition reads clearly, with weight and calm. Step closer, and the surface reveals itself as a field of controlled scratches, each one a small act of removal that contributes to the whole.

Light is not a backdrop here. It is a collaborator. As the viewer shifts position, the image shifts too, moving between full presence and soft quiet. The hands seem to emerge, then withdraw. That movement is not accidental. It is the work.

In classical anatomy, hands were studied with particular devotion, as the most expressive and complex structure of the human form. Here, that same reverence guides the composition. The gesture depicted is intimate, poetic, caught in a moment before meaning crystallizes into speech. Something universal, rendered in damage.

Spoken Before Words continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
