A head emerges from the surrounding black, bound in spiralling bands that cross the brow and seal the eyes. Only the lips are left uncovered, a single soft curve of presence in a face otherwise given over to shadow.
No paint. No print. No ink. The bands take their shape entirely from depth and controlled absence, a field of individual marks that gathers into light exactly where the surface allows it and lets the dark take the rest.
The image shifts with light, contrast and the viewer's perspective, without ever leaving. Move past it and the ribbon seems to tighten or loosen, the bound head stepping forward into visibility, then settling back into the void it was carved from.
From across a room it reads as a quiet, monumental silhouette, still and self contained. Walk closer and that stillness opens into a field of depth, countless small shifts of surface that only resolve into a face at a certain distance and a certain light.
The spiral binds more than a face. It speaks of a voice held back, thought wound tightly inward, a silence chosen rather than imposed, with only the mouth left free to suggest what might still be said.
Spiral of Silence continues the Art with Void series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through depth and absence rather than paint or print. A visual language where absence is not emptiness, but presence.
"What is wrapped away does not disappear, it waits for the light to ask again."
