Rays Falling on a Silent Multitude

A colossal black sun hangs at the centre of the composition, its edge burning with a brilliant white halo. Beneath it, thin vertical rays fall like a curtain toward the earth, and a silent multitude gathers to receive them, small figures standing shoulder to shoulder beneath a sky that has gone dark at noon.

There is a stillness to the scene that feels almost religious, the kind of silence that falls over a crowd the moment something larger than themselves appears overhead. Rays Falling on a Silent Multitude asks what it means to stand small before an event you cannot explain, and to stay anyway, together, looking up.

No paint. No print. No ink. The black sun, the halo, and the field of watching figures are formed entirely through controlled scratches worked into the surface of the acrylic glass, an image built by removal rather than addition.

The image is always present, visible in ordinary light as much as under a lamp. Light does not create it. It sharpens it, deepening the contrast between the void at the centre and the glow that spills around it, and the piece reads differently as you move past it, without ever losing its form.

From across a room, the eclipse reads as a single monumental gesture, black held inside white. Step closer and that gesture dissolves into a field of controlled surface damage, marks that only resolve into meaning again from a distance, much like the multitude below the halo, indistinct as individuals, unmistakable as one body.
