A single rose stands in an immense black field, its bloom caught in a single beam of light while everything around it refuses to exist. The upper petals gather into a dense cluster of fine marks, bright and crowded where the light lands hardest, as if that is the only place the flower has chosen to remain visible. Below, the petals thin into scattered traces, and the stem all but disappears into a faint, broken line reaching down into the dark.

Nothing here was added. The image is built from depth and absence, a field of individual marks set into the surface rather than drawn upon it. No paint, no print, no ink gives this rose its shape, only the quiet accumulation of points that the light chooses to reveal and the void chooses to withhold.

The rose carries its own contradiction. Steel curls where softness is expected, a bloom that could be touched or could cut, beauty holding an edge. Scattered into silence, it becomes less a flower than a memory of one, present enough to recognize, faint enough to doubt.

Seen from across a room, the work reads as a single gesture of light against darkness, monumental in its restraint. Close up, that same gesture dissolves into a field of depth, countless small shifts in the surface that shift again as the viewer moves. The bloom appears and fades with light, contrast and perspective, never settling into one fixed image.

This piece continues the Art with Void series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through depth and absence rather than paint or print. A visual language where absence is not emptiness, but presence.

"Even at its most delicate, the rose insists on being seen."
