One Steps From the Multitude

One Steps From the Multitude begins with repetition. Hundreds of identical figures stand shoulder to shoulder, the same pale face repeated until it no longer reads as a face at all, but as a pattern, a wall, a single dark mass built from countless smaller sames.

Then, at the very edge of that formation, one figure turns. A foot lifts from the line. A shoulder angles toward the open white beyond the crowd. Nothing separates this figure from the hundreds behind it except the decision to move.

From across the room the work reads as architecture, a dense black field pressing against an empty page. Come closer and that field opens into something else entirely, a surface built from controlled scratches. No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, present in every kind of light, waiting for nothing.

Light does not create this image. It sharpens it. Under a direct source the contrast deepens, the crowd gains weight, and the departing figure catches a thin, cold gleam the others do not share. It reads differently from different angles, without ever losing the image.

The subject is an old, quiet fear: to be one of hundreds, indistinguishable, folded into a line that has already decided where it is going. And an old, quiet hope: that leaving is still possible, that a single figure can still choose the doorway over the formation.

One Steps From the Multitude continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. This work is unique.
