Neither Bowed Nor Broken is a contemporary artwork about defiance, identity and the weight of standing your ground.

William Wallace emerges from darkness. Not through paint, not through print, not through ink. The figure appears through controlled surface damage on acrylic glass, revealed only where light finds the marks and gives them form. Where the light does not reach, he dissolves back into shadow.

The title is not a statement about victory. It is a statement about posture. About what a person looks like when they have faced everything and chosen not to submit. The face paint, the weathered cloth, the grip on the sword hilt, these are not symbols of aggression. They are symbols of presence. Of someone who has decided to remain.

That quality is inseparable from the medium. The image exists because the surface has been altered. Not built up, but worn down. What you see is what was removed. In that way, the work and its subject share the same logic: form revealed through pressure, through controlled damage, through marks that do not disappear.

From across the room, the figure is monumental. A silhouette rising from black. From close, the surface becomes a field of controlled scratches, each catching the light at a different angle. As the viewer moves, Wallace shifts between clarity and absence, between presence and shadow.

This work continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

"He does not step forward. He simply refuses to step back."
