Love Holds Its Breath

Love Holds Its Breath is a contemporary artwork about longing, concealment and the emotional weight of a touch that has not yet happened.

Two figures stand at the threshold of an embrace. A man in a dark suit, a woman in a soft dress, drawn toward each other inside a darkness so deep it feels physical. Both faces are hidden beneath white cloth. Lips press gently against the fabric from within, suggesting breath, presence, the nearness of words that remain unspoken. Nothing is declared. Everything is felt.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image appears through controlled surface damage on acrylic glass. Each scratch holds and redirects the light in its own way. As the viewer moves, the figures sharpen and soften, shifting between depth and quiet. The white cloth seems to glow from within. The surrounding darkness draws closer.

Seen from a distance, the work reads as a single, silent scene. Two bodies. Stillness. Restraint. Approached closely, the surface reveals itself as a field of controlled scratches, carrying no color, only light, angle and the slow construction of form.

There is something deliberately symbolic in the absence of faces. Love here has no name, no past, no recognizable feature. It exists only as proximity. As tension. As the silence between two people who know everything about each other without needing to speak or be seen.

This work continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
