Just Before Becoming is a contemporary artwork about intimacy, transformation and the threshold between two becoming one.

The two figures do not touch. They almost do. In that almost, everything lives. No faces are shown, no features, no detail that would make them specific. Only contours. Only the suggestion of two forms drawn toward each other by something older than language.

The image does not appear through paint or print. It emerges through controlled scratches in the surface of acrylic glass. As light shifts, the figures move between clarity and shadow, sharpening and softening as they turn. From a distance, the work reads as a single luminous moment. Up close, the surface opens into a field of controlled surface damage, each mark catching the light at its own angle.

The darkness in this piece is not empty. It holds the figures in place. It is the silence before a word is spoken, the held breath before a decision is made. The scratched surface does not add light. It releases it, selectively, through removal.

That moment, just before becoming, is not a beginning and not an end. It is a threshold. Two shadows on the edge of merging, still separate, still themselves, still suspended in the last instant before something changes forever.

Just Before Becoming continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

"The image lives in the space between them, not in the figures themselves."
