Horn Rising From Silence

The rhino appears in profile, its great horn rising toward the upper edge of the frame, as though the animal has paused at the threshold between visibility and dark. The rest of the head recedes into the folded terrain of its hide, a surface built not from a single sweeping form but from a field of individual marks that gather where the skin creases and thin where it turns away from the light.

Nothing here has been added. There is no paint, no print, no ink. The image exists as depth and controlled absence in the surface itself, so that what you see is less a picture than a shape the light chooses to reveal. Move past it, or let the room's light shift, and the horn seems to draw itself upward again, the eye to deepen, the folds of hide to resettle into darkness.

From across a room, the work reads as a single monumental gesture, a horn rising out of black, calm and unhurried. Closer, that silence resolves into a field of depth, mark by mark, ridge by ridge, the whole architecture of an ancient hide laid bare in points of light and the spaces between them.

The rhino carries its own quiet symbolism, an animal whose armor could not protect it from disappearance, whose horn has always meant both defense and danger. Rendered here as a study in absence, it becomes something closer to a question than a portrait, what remains present, and what is already fading. The horn rising to the very edge of the frame reads almost as a last gesture toward the light, a refusal to be entirely swallowed by the dark that surrounds it.

Horn Rising From Silence continues the Art with Void series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through depth and absence rather than paint or print. It asks the viewer to stand still, to look twice, to let the darkness do some of the work.
