She is bent over the cello, eyes closed, the bow drawn low across the strings in a single unbroken line. Nothing about the pose asks to be watched, it is a moment of concentration so complete that the room around her has gone to black, and only the places where the music happens are given light.
The light keeps precisely that: the curve of her forearm as it draws the bow, the line of her cheek bent toward the instrument, the swell of the cello's body catching the glow as if it were an extension of her own. The strings hold a thread of brightness too, drawn taut between hand and wood, the one visible trace of the sound she is making.
Everything else is given to the dark. Her shoulders, the fall of her dress, the scroll of the cello rising out of sight, all of it recedes so that the work asks nothing more of you than to watch concentration itself, a body folding fully into an instrument.
No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, built as a field of fine scratches rather than a single stroke, dense where the forearm and cheek hold the light, almost absent where the dark takes over.
The image is always present, in daylight as in a dim room. Light does not create it, it sharpens it. Under a direct source the scratches catch and the contrast deepens, and the portrait reads differently depending on where you stand, the bow seeming to move without the shape ever breaking.
Her Silence Strung in Light belongs to In the Light, a series within Art with Scratch by Tijs Dragtsma in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print, and in which that same damage becomes a way of letting a person step forward out of the dark entirely on their own terms.
"The silence before a note is still music."
