Held Into One

Held Into One is a contemporary artwork about closeness, surrender and the moment when two separate bodies become a single form.

Two figures hold each other so completely that the boundary between them disappears. They do not stand beside one another. They have merged into one sculptural shape, lit from a single soft source, drawn together by deep surrounding shadow. The composition holds nothing else. Only the embrace. Only the light.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image emerges through controlled surface damage on acrylic glass. As the viewer moves, or as the light shifts, the figures sharpen and soften, gaining depth against the dark and settling into it. From a distance the work reads as a single monumental silhouette. Step closer, and the surface becomes a field of controlled scratches, each one carrying a fragment of the whole.

That quality mirrors what the work is about. In an embrace this total, individual edges soften. What remains is not two people, but the shape of something shared. The scratch medium holds that idea in its structure. The image exists not by adding anything to the surface, but by taking something away, by opening it to light, by making absence meaningful.

The chiaroscuro is not atmosphere. It is argument. The deep shadow masses give the illuminated forms their weight. Without the darkness, there is no embrace. The light earns its place by knowing what it leaves behind.

Held Into One continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
