Hands Folded Beneath the Moon

A figure sits at a table cleared of everything but itself, hands folded, a full moon in place of a face. The posture is quiet, almost devotional, the kind of stillness that falls right before or right after something has been said. No expression is offered, only presence, and waiting.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, opened rather than added, a field of individual marks that catch and hold the light so the collar, the shoulders and the folded hands come forward as glowing fields against a black that keeps its depth.

The moon head reads as distance made visible, the part of a person that turns away even while the body stays close and open. Hands folded on an empty table carry an old, plain gesture, patience, restraint, someone holding something quiet inside. Between the glowing figure and the dark around it sits the whole story, a person present and unreachable in the same breath.

The image is always there, with or without direct light. Light does not create it, it sharpens it. Under a raking light the contrast deepens and the surface takes on a quiet shine, while from across a room the whole scene settles into one soft, monumental glow. Move closer and that glow resolves into a field of fine scratches, each one part of a surface that was taken away rather than built up.
