A hand opens, and for a moment it holds nothing but light. Grains Against the Dark follows that instant when sand begins its fall, each particle catching illumination before it is lost to the dark that surrounds it.

The image is built the way the Void series always builds its images, through depth and controlled absence rather than addition. Nothing is laid onto the surface. The hand, the falling grains, the quiet pool gathering below, all of it exists because of what has been taken away, not what has been added.

From a distance the work reads as a single gesture, calm and almost still. Step closer and that gesture dissolves into a field of individual marks, each one catching the light differently, each one a single grain suspended mid fall. The closer you look, the less certain the hand becomes, and the more the falling itself takes over.

Sand has always carried the weight of time passing, held briefly and then let go. Here that old symbol is given a second life. The work does not just depict the passing of something precious, it performs it, appearing and receding as the light around it shifts and as the viewer moves.

Acrylic glass holds the image in place, but offers no fixed version of it. Morning light, evening shadow, a lamp switched on in a quiet room, each changes what the eye is able to recover from the dark. The work is never finished settling.

Grains Against the Dark continues the Art with Void series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through depth and absence rather than paint or print. A visual language where absence is not emptiness, but presence.

"What the hand lets go of, the light still remembers."
