Grace Under Stone

Grace Under Stone is a contemporary artwork about stillness, confinement and the quiet persistence of the human form.

The figure stands upright. Around it, rigid folds press close, concrete in their weight, architectural in their grip. And yet the body beneath holds its shape, holds its posture, holds its grace. That is the heart of this work: something alive, enclosed by something that is not.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image emerges through controlled surface damage on acrylic glass. Nothing is added. Everything is taken away. What the viewer sees is what remains after removal.

Light does the rest. As the viewer shifts, the surface catches and releases differently, and the figure moves between depth and quiet, between clarity and shadow. From across the room, the work reads as monumental, a body drawn from shadow and silence. Step closer, and it becomes a field of controlled marks on glass, precise and quiet.

Architecture can shelter. It can also confine. The stone-like folds wrapped around this figure do both at once. Grace does not disappear under pressure. It adapts. It endures. The work holds that contradiction without resolving it.

Grace Under Stone continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
