Grace Beneath the Wind

On a dune crest, one tuft of grass leans into the wind. Everything else has been stripped away, no horizon, no color, only a single hard light falling from above onto a field of deep, pure black. It is a small, stubborn gesture, staged like a scene from an old master painting.

Grace Beneath the Wind is about the strength it takes to bend without breaking. The grass has no shelter and no companions, only its own root and the weight of something far larger than itself. That quiet resistance mirrors the way this entire series is made, presence built through loss rather than addition.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is built by removing material through controlled scratches, marks made directly into the surface of the acrylic glass. It is not applied onto the surface, it becomes part of it, the way a scar becomes part of skin.

The image is always present, visible even in soft, ambient light. Light does not create the image, it sharpens it. Under direct light the scratches catch and reflect, the contrast deepens, and the dust seems to hang in the air around the bending grass. It reads differently from different angles, without ever losing the image. Seen from across a room the work is monumental and still, up close it dissolves into a quiet field of scratches.

Grace Beneath the Wind continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
