There are moments between people that cannot be spoken. A closeness that exceeds language, where two bodies become a single form, where the distance between faces collapses into something that feels like breath held still.

This work captures one of those moments.

The two figures in Given Without Words do not stand together. They have become each other. Their forms flow into a single sculptural shape, lit by a single soft source, surrounded by deep shadow. The chiaroscuro is not decorative. It is the architecture of intimacy, the way light reveals only what matters and lets the rest disappear.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image emerges from controlled surface damage on acrylic glass. Up close, the surface reveals itself as a field of controlled scratches, marks without obvious direction, a quiet kind of disruption. From a distance, those marks resolve into two people holding on.

As light shifts across the surface, the figures sharpen and soften. There are angles where they seem almost to dissolve into the material, and angles where they return with sudden clarity. That movement is not incidental. It mirrors the nature of the subject itself. Connection is not always visible. It lives in the way things catch the light.

The black background does not feel like absence here. It feels like shelter. Like the world outside this embrace has simply ceased to matter.

Given Without Words continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

"Some things are only said in silence, and in closeness, and in the way two shapes become one."
