Frozen Waves of Silence

Frozen Waves of Silence begins with a plain that could be desert or dream, its surface carved by wind into long curling ridges that move like waves caught mid breath and stilled forever. A single hard light falls from above, and the deep black around the dunes swallows every distraction until only this frozen motion remains.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, built through controlled scratches rather than anything added on top. What looks like a photograph is in fact an absence, a shape made by what has been taken away, and that quiet act of removal is the heart of every work in this series.

The image is always present, with or without direct light. Under a focused source the scratches catch and reflect, the contrast deepens, the ridges gain weight and shadow. It reads differently from different angles, without ever losing the image. Light does not create the image. It sharpens it.

From across the room the piece reads as a single monumental landscape, hushed and complete. Step closer and that landscape dissolves into a field of fine, deliberate scratches, each one part of a larger drift that only makes sense from a distance, the way memory smooths detail into shape.

Beneath the surface subject there is a quieter one. Snow that erases its own history with every gust speaks to how stillness is never truly still, how silence carries the record of everything that shaped it. The dunes remember the wind even after the wind is gone.

Frozen Waves of Silence continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
