He is turned away from us, and that is the whole point. Crowned, caped in white fur trim, one fist raised against a single shaft of light, he faces not the viewer but the thousands who came to see him. The microphone stand is almost incidental. What matters is the gesture, a king addressing his own made kingdom from the edge of a stage that dissolves into darkness.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, built from a field of individual marks that catch and hold the light rather than apply it. Up close it reads as pure abrasion, a storm of fine lines crossing the dark. Step back and the storm resolves into a man, a crown, a raised arm, a hall full of tiny burning points.

The image is always present, with or without direct light. Light does not create it here, it sharpens it. Under a focused source the beam that falls across his shoulders deepens, the crowd's distant lights gather intensity, and the whole scene reads differently depending on where you stand, without ever losing its shape.

The crown is borrowed, theatrical, self-given. That is part of what makes this image endure: not royalty by birth but royalty claimed for the length of a performance, a myth built nightly and surrendered again each time the lights come up. Scratched rather than painted, the portrait keeps that same quality of something earned by repetition and withheld from full view.

This continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

"He never once looked back at us. He didn't have to."
