Folded Into Darkness

Folded Into Darkness begins where the face disappears. A classical profile, nose and lips catching the last light, is wrapped tightly in fabric until only the brightest folds remain visible against total black.

Nothing here is added. The image exists because the surface has been taken away, controlled scratches on acrylic glass letting light pass where the material has been altered and refusing it everywhere else. Move past the work and the folds shift, the face drifting between clarity and absence, as if it were breathing under the cloth.

The wrapping suggests concealment, protection, even mourning, a face caught in the moment before it vanishes or the moment it is revealed. What is hidden becomes more present than what is shown, and the eyes we cannot see hold more weight than any gaze could.

From across the room the piece reads as sculpture, monumental and still. Close in, it dissolves into a field of controlled scratches, a surface that only resolves into a face again once the viewer steps back and the light finds it.

This work continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print.
