Two clippers lean into the same wind, sails stretched taut and dark against a pale, clouded sky. Their bows cut the water with equal hunger, throwing up foam that splits and scatters behind them, the visible trace of two vessels refusing to yield an inch.
Foam Split by Ambition is built the way every work in this series is built, through removal, not addition. No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, controlled surface damage standing in for pigment, each mark deciding where light will fall and where it will be held back.
From a distance the composition reads as a single, monumental moment, two ships locked in a duel that could belong to any century. Step closer and that certainty dissolves into a field of controlled scratches, a surface that only resolves back into sails and spray once you step away again.
The image is always present, in any light. Light does not create it. It sharpens it. Under direct light the scratches catch and reflect, the contrast deepens, and the work reads differently from one angle to the next without ever losing what it shows.
There is a symbolic layer here too. A race between equals is rarely about the wind alone, it is about will, about the refusal to fall a length behind. The foam thrown from these hulls is ambition made visible, the residue of two crews pushing a fixed set of sails as far as it will go.
Foam Split by Ambition continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
"Two ships, one wind, and the foam that remembers the difference."
