Feathers Scratched Into Silence

An owl's face gathers out of pure black, its crown formed from a field of fine scratches that catch and scatter the light. The ear tufts rise like two flames caught mid flicker, and the mottled crown between them reads as a burst of static energy, feathers stripped of everything but their electricity.

The eyes stay untouched. They are voids cut clean out of the light around them, and it is that darkness, not the glow, that holds the gaze. Between them the beak and the lower face sink back into the same black, so the whole lower half of the bird dissolves before it ever reaches shoulders or wings. What remains is a face suspended in its own night, watching without needing to be seen in full.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, built by removal rather than addition, so the owl exists only where the surface has been disturbed and disappears everywhere it has not.

The image is always present, even without direct light. Light does not create it, it sharpens it. Under a raking source the crown ignites and the contrast deepens, while the eyes stay locked in their own darkness regardless of the angle. It reads differently as you move past it, without ever losing the bird at its center.

From across a room the work reads as a single watchful presence in the dark, a face that seems to hold still and hold its breath. Up close that presence breaks apart into a field of individual marks, none of them meaningful alone, all of them necessary together.

Owls carry an old symbolic weight, the creature that sees in the dark, that is still when everything else moves, that watches from the threshold between night and day. Here that stillness becomes literal: a face built from disturbance, staring out of a silence it never breaks.

Feathers Scratched Into Silence continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure. This work is unique.
