Empire Breathes

Empire Breathes is a cinematic artwork about power, silence and the presence that exists before a word is spoken.

The figure does not announce itself. It emerges from darkness, as if summoned by light rather than placed within it. A helmet rises from absolute black, its contours traced by selective illumination. The armor holds light in certain places, releases it in others, and the iconic silhouette takes shape through contrast alone. There is no background. There is only what light touches and what it leaves behind.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image exists through controlled surface damage on acrylic glass. Every scratch responds to light at its own angle, and the figure appears through that variation, through removal rather than addition. The Stormtrooper is not drawn onto the surface. It is revealed within it.

From a distance, the figure is monumental. A symbol so embedded in visual culture that recognition arrives before conscious thought. Move closer and the surface opens into a field of controlled marks, a texture of disruption from which the image has been coaxed into existence. The same work, two entirely different encounters.

That duality belongs to the subject. The Stormtrooper is a figure of collective order, of individual identity subsumed into uniform, of authority that requires no face. Here it emerges from nothing and returns to nothing at the edges, a presence held in tension with the darkness that surrounds it. Power, breathing.

Empire Breathes continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. As light shifts across the surface, the figure moves between clarity and near absence. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
