Echo of Elton John is a contemporary artwork about presence, spectacle and the quiet force that lives behind an iconic image.

The portrait captures him at his most recognizable. The signature glasses. The confident gaze. The rim light catching the edge of a face shaped by decades on stage. He is not performing here, and yet the work feels like a performance. An echo of everything he has given to a room full of people who already knew every word.

The image appears through controlled surface damage on acrylic glass. No paint. No print. No ink. Every scratch catches the light at a different angle, slowly pulling the face forward from deep shadow. The portrait is not placed on the surface. It is drawn out of it.

From a distance, the work is monumental. A sharp silhouette emerging from darkness, lit from the side, still and certain. Move closer, and the image dissolves into a field of controlled scratches, each one belonging to the whole, none of them meaning much on its own. The face only assembles when the light agrees.

There is something fitting in that. Elton John has always existed between spectacle and silence. The costumes, the arenas, the sunglasses that became a symbol, and beneath it all, something far more fragile. This work holds both. The image comes together and separates depending on where you stand, depending on how the light falls across the surface.

Echo of Elton John continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
