Descent Into White

Descent Into White begins at the edge of the square, tight white rings turning inward, and never quite ends, drawn down and down into a well of black that will not give up its floor. Every band presses close against the next, a coil without a beginning, until the rings narrow to a point that could be an inch away or a mile.

The image reads first as motion, a spiral caught in the middle of falling. It is a study of gravity without weight, the way the eye follows a single line and loses itself entirely, pulled toward a centre that stays dark no matter how much white surrounds it.

There is a symbolic weight to the descent. It speaks to focus and its cost, how attention narrows a wide world down to a single point, how the closer something is looked at, the less of it remains visible. The rings become a kind of staircase for the eye, one that ends in stillness rather than an answer.

Like every work in the series, it does not hold one fixed face. Depth, contrast and the light in the room decide how far the funnel appears to fall, and from another angle the same surface can seem to close over, calm and flat.

Seen from across a room, the rings settle into a single dense white form, monumental against the dark. Move closer and that same surface opens into a full field of depth, ring within ring, each one catching the light on its own terms.

Descent Into White continues the Art with Void series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through depth and absence rather than paint or print. A visual language where absence is not emptiness, but presence.
