Out of a field of pure black, Salvador Dalí surfaces not as a photograph but as a presence held together by light. His face is formed from a field of individual marks, scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass rather than printed or painted onto it, so that the forehead, the famous upturned moustache and the wide, fixed stare arrive as a kind of controlled surface damage, structure where you would expect pigment.

Beside his cheek, an ocelot rests its head against him, its spotted coat and long whiskers formed by the same scratched field, tightening at the stripes and rosettes until the fur seems to breathe. Two faces, human and animal, share one light source and one gaze toward the viewer, and the work lets the rest dissolve into untouched black. Nothing is added here. Everything visible is something taken away.

Dalí built his public self as theatre, a mask so exaggerated it became more real than the man underneath. Pairing him with a wild cat, calm against his shoulder, reads as a quiet comment on that performance: instinct resting beside invention, the untamed next to the self-made icon. The portrait keeps only what the light can hold, and in doing so it asks what remains of a persona once the surface is stripped back to its essentials.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is always present in the acrylic glass, visible without any particular light falling on it. Light does not create the image here. It sharpens it, deepening the contrast across Dalí's eyes and the cat's striped face, letting the scratches catch and hold a quiet shine. It reads differently from different angles, without ever losing the image underneath.

Seen from across a room, the work settles into a monumental, almost sculptural portrait. Step closer and that certainty gives way to a field of fine scratches, individual marks that only resolve into a face and a feline companion from a distance. That shift between the whole and its particles is where the piece lives.

Dalí Scratched From Darkness continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. This work is unique.

"A mask, however wild, is still built from what it leaves exposed to the light."
