She has folded herself around her own knees, one arm crossing her face so that only a single eye remains, watching from inside the shelter she has built with her own body. There is no room left outside that curve. The pose is a wall and a window at once, open just enough to let one eye meet yours.
No paint. No print. No ink. The entire figure is formed through controlled surface damage, a field of fine scratches held in the acrylic glass itself, left to hold their place in the material rather than sit on top of it. From across a room the body reads as a single pale shape curled against the dark, almost whole, almost calm. Step closer and that calm dissolves into the field of individual marks that built it, each one part of a surface that never stops moving under the eye.
The black around her is left untouched, so the glass itself becomes the space she is hiding in. Light does not create the image, it is always there, but light sharpens it, deepens the contrast along her spine and knees, and lets the one visible eye hold its quiet weight from almost any angle in the room.
This is a portrait of the moment before a person decides whether to be seen. The knees, the crossed arm, the hidden half of the face, all of it reads as self protection rather than concealment, a body curling inward to gather itself rather than to disappear. What remains uncovered, that single eye, is the part of her still choosing to look back.
Curled Into Her Own Light continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
"She gives you one eye, and keeps the rest of herself for no one."
