Concrete Face Awakens

Concrete Face Awakens shows a face rising out of a tower of raw, brutalist architecture, as though the building had spent years quietly becoming a person. Beams, ledges and shadowed recesses fold into a brow, an eye, the bridge of a nose, until structure and face are no longer two separate things.

There is a quiet unease in that fusion. We build walls to shelter identity, and here identity has grown back through the wall, looking out with a single steady eye. The work asks what happens when the places we construct start to hold more of us than we intended, when concrete remembers a face.

No paint. No print. No ink. The image is scratched into the surface of the acrylic glass, brought forward through controlled surface damage rather than laid onto the surface. The face and the tower share the same skin, built by removal, not addition.

The image is always present, in every light. Light does not create it, it sharpens it. Under a directed source the scratches catch and reflect, the concrete grain deepens and the eye seems to hold you a moment longer. It reads differently from different angles, without ever losing the face inside the stone.

From across a room the work reads as a monument, a fragment of architecture caught in transformation. Step closer and that monument opens into a fine field of controlled scratches, resolving back into a face only once you step away again, the way a person is truly seen only from a certain distance.

Concrete Face Awakens continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.
